What’s Your Decorating Style?

Custom Plantation Shutters Los Angeles

If you had to define the overarching style in your home, what would you call it? At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we’ve found that many of our customers use the terms “modern” or “contemporary” but often don’t realize that the two words aren’t actually the same. Which is, really, OK, because we carry the full line of Hunter Douglas window fashions and can find a style that will fit your décor, no matter the term. Read on to learn more!

Which Style Is Which?

Although “contemporary” and “modern” seem interchangeable (and are in other senses), in fact, each is associated with different styles. “Modern” relates to “mid-century modern,” which originated in the mid-20th century (the 1950s and 1960s). “Contemporary,” on the other hand, is actually refers to what’s current today. While modern style is full of warm neutrals and crisp lines, contemporary style is offers a more fluid definition and might actually mean something different ten years from now than it does today.

Window Treatments for Both Styles

With the proper definitions in hand, you can determine which treatments might be best for your style. If you favor more of a modern style, you might want treatments in earthy colors or bright whites that are made with natural materials. Consider wood blinds or shutters, drapery, or shades. Wood blinds are popular because they stand the test of time, both in style and in durability, and bring the beauty of the outdoors inside. Parkland® Wood Blinds from Hunter Douglas are made from real hardwoods, like oak, cherry, and basswood. Hunter Douglas also offers the faux wood Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters, which look like genuine wood but are lighter and even more durable, guaranteed not to crack, peel, warp, chip, or fade. If you favor more of a contemporary style, consider metal blinds for a sleek look. Hunter Douglas makes Modern Precious Metals®, which are available in a wide range of finishes, such as metallics, mattes, and pearlescent colors, so you can accentuate both your windows and your room.

Blending Both Styles

If your look is neither modern nor contemporary but more of a blend of both, you can find a balance in your window fashions too! Clean and uncluttered, Design Studio™ Roller Shades offer a minimalist approach that can complement any style. Or look to drapery for a classic aesthetic, either as a standalone treatment or to pair with an existing window fashion. Drapery is great for larger expanses of glass like sliders, can emphasize the lines of a room, and does a great job helping cut light gaps on existing treatments.
