Did you know that the Pantone Color Institute—the world’s foremost authority on color—chooses a color of the year each year? It’s a fascinating tradition, and one that impacts more than you might imagine. At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we love how much color plays a role in a home—and we’ll be happy to help you determine if this year’s color is right for your space. Read on to learn more!

Why Is Color Important?

Color enhances our mood, and even more, it often also reflects it. The professionals at the Pantone Color Institute know color inside and out and understand its impacts on culture and cultural climate. “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. Color is not a designer’s whim. Color trends come from where we are, where we want to go, and how people are feeling or not feeling. “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” Pressman also noted.

Viva Mangenta

This year’s color is Viva Magenta, which a nuanced balance of warm and cool that “vibrates with vim and vigor.” Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, notes that we are in an age of technology, so “we look to draw inspiration from nature.” Viva Magenta, she says, is “rooted in the primordial” and “reconnects us to original matter…It galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

You can bring dashes or hints of the color to your room through custom drapery or side panels. The Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ offers a variety of fabrics in numerous colors and textures and even includes several exclusive designs from world-renown textile designers. Or you can choose a window treatment in a neutral color as a good foundation—consider the popular Duette® Cellular Shade. Then you can bring Viva Magenta into your home in smaller amounts, through décor and artwork.

Handling Trending Colors

You’ll see that this year’s color will lead the way in the coming months. If you want some ideas about how to bring it to your specific situation, be sure to speak with one of our consultants.
