Soundproofing Your Space

If your home isn’t quiet enough (perhaps you have noisy neighbors, nearby construction, lots of traffic, or perpetually barking dogs), it’s no longer the haven you probably want it to be. And that’s more than distracting—it can actually impact your quality of life. At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we know that a calming, peaceful environment is important, so we’re offering some tips about soundproofing your space. Check them out below!

Reducing Noise Entering Your Home

Outside your home, particularly if you live on a busy street, you could add a row of hedges to block sound. A side benefit to that is that you’re adding some beauty to your yard. Inside your home, you have a few options for ways to reduce noise. If you have hollow doors, replace them with solid-core ones to block noise. If you have gaps around your door frames, use weatherstripping and a door sweep to prevent sound incursion. To absorb noise, add acoustic panels or fabric wall hangings or go a heavier-duty route by doubling up your drywall. Underlay your flooring with foam, cork, or rubber to reduce vibrations, and add acoustic tiles to the ceiling to reduce noise from upper floors.

Choose the Right Window Treatments

Window treatments also go a long way to reducing unwanted noise. Any window treatment will do this to some degree because it’s right there on the window, but if you want to have something that actively reduces sound, you might need to find something that’s designed for it. For example, honeycomb-style shades, such as Duette® Cellular Shades and Sonnette® Cellular Shades, are designed to insulate the windows. Their honeycomb-shaped pockets trap air and sound, greatly reducing noise in a room. You could also consider roman shades, such as Providence® Woven Wood Shades and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which also offer great aesthetics, as well as a level of sophistication and timelessness. For larger expanses of windows, Cadence® Vertical Blinds are an excellent choice. They mimic plush drapery folds and are available in a number of fabric and color selections. No matter if you’re looking to round out your décor or you’re looking for ways to enjoy some peace and quiet, all of these window treatment options will help you create a more comfortable living space.
