Maximize Your Space

If your home has an attic that you’re not using, you might not be fully optimizing the space you have. Many attics can become functional rooms, with just a little creativity and elbow grease. At F&R Interiors here in Los Angeles, we have a few ideas that could get your creative juices flowing. Check them out below!

Ideas for Your Attic

You can elevate your attic beyond just cobwebs and dust and transform it into a space you look forward to spending time in. If you plan to do the work yourself, just remember to check out local building codes, get any needed permits, and have an HVAC company ensure that your ductwork is in order. Here are some things to consider for your attic:

  • Dreamy bathroom. Your attic can become that spa-like retreat of your dreams. Even if you don’t go all-out with luxury, adding an extra bath to your home could increase its overall value
  • Book nook. Avid readers often dream of the perfect quiet reading nook. If that idea resonates for you, consider the ways you can transform your attic. If it has sloped ceilings, use lower furniture and smaller artwork. With a comfy bench, a side table, a few accessories, and a reading lamp, the area could become your stress-free quiet zone.
  • Spacious closet. Want more space for your duds and shoes? Why not create a roomy closet right above your head? Paint the space a clean white for a backdrop, and add a full mirror, a dresser, and a changing stool. If you want to add built-in shelves, that’s a great bonus.
  • Rentable room. Lots of people make cash on the side by renting out space to vacationers or short-term renters. If your attic is big enough, it could become a cute studio apartment, with an economy kitchen, a half bath, and a sleeping area.

Treat the Windows

To make the interior more homey and to add some needed privacy control, be sure to treat the windows. If you want to keep the outside air out and the inside air in, consider treatments specially designed for insulating the window, such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades, or Solera® Soft Shades. And if you really want to kick your attic aesthetic up a notch, think about side panels from the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™.
