Good Window Fashions for Doors

Heritiance® Hardwood Shutters

Openings like sliders, patio doors, and French doors, just like windows, have a large expanse of glass, so for light control, UV protection, and more, adding window fashions to those openings is important. However, it can seem overwhelming to find the right treatment. At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we can offer some ideas for how to approach the task—check them out below!

Looks and Function

Because sliders, patio doors, and French doors are often in rooms where there’s already a treated window, finding a window fashion that’s compatible with what’s already there is critical. You could go with a contrasting look to add depth and dimension, or you could choose to coordinate or match aesthetics to round out the look of the room. Always remember a couple of things:

  • In an open concept or “great” room, you might already have many different styles of windows, including regular windows, large picture windows, odd shaped windows, and skylights.
  • Functionality might make a difference as well—doors are more frequently (and more robustly) used than windows, so the treatment might well function differently than for the windows.

Coordinating Looks

To best match or coordinate your door treatment with your existing window fashion, consider Duette® Cellular Shades, which offer excellent sound absorption and can be hung vertically for the wider opening. Carole Fabrics Custom Drapes are wonderful as standalone treatments and come in over 4,000 fabric and color options, so they’ll work easily with other window fashions in the space. Heritance® Wood Shutters are made entirely from genuine hardwood, which adds an artisanal look to a room. Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Vinyl Shutters are durable and functional, able to withstand intense sun and moisture without fading or chipping. Finally, NewStyle® Composite Shutters work well in an energetic space; they look like real wood but are much lighter and more durable.

Going Vertical

Treatments that are designed for vertical openings are lovely, flexible, and functional. Consider Luminette® Sheer Panels, which allow for light and privacy control while maintaining some view-through. Skyline® Panel-Track Blinds are gliding panels that offer smooth operation and stack neatly when open. Cadence® Vertical Blinds are reminiscent of drapery while being purpose-built for doors and large expanses of windows. Somner® Vertical Blinds are available in vinyl, fabric, and aluminum styles and can make a statement in the room. Finally, Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds are an excellent choice for the minimalist home and are made in over 40 material and color options.
