Following a Home-Maintenance Schedule

Your home is an investment, and as such, it’s ideal to try to keep it running and looking as good as it can. Regular maintenance is the best approach, but many homeowners find it daunting. At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we recommend using a home-maintenance schedule to break down tasks into manageable time periods. Check out one suggestion below!
Monthly
Some tasks are best done on a regular cadence, such as every month. These chores are pretty easy to accomplish and can help keep your home in tip-top shape.
- Inspect and replace your HVAC filters as needed for the best air quality in your home.
- Check under sinks, around appliances, and in your basement or crawl space for any leaks, to help prevent or reduce water damage.
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If you need to replace the batteries, now’s a good time.
- To clean and freshen your garbage disposal, grind ice cubes and citrus peels.
- Lightly dust your blinds or shades.
In the Summer
Summer is a great time to tackle outdoor tasks.
- Trim any overgrowth of your trees and shrubs. You’ll improve your home’s aesthetics and help protect it.
- Inspect your exterior paint; if any areas need retouching, take care of it.
- Inspect your foundation for cracks or signs of settling. If you need to repair anything, call a professional.
- Make sure all of your windows open and close properly, and check your window treatments for signs of excess wear and tear. If you can’t fix an issue, consider replacing the item.
In the Fall/Winter
Back-to-school season is a good time to think about doing these things:
- Remove any debris or leaves from your yard.
- Clean faux wood or aluminum blinds by submerging them in lukewarm water with a gentle detergent; gently rub to remove dirt, and then reinstall the blind while it’s still damp.
- Spot-clean stains on your shades by using lukewarm water and a soft cloth with a very mild detergent—be sure not to rub them, which can harm the fabric.
In the Spring
Head back to outdoor tasks in the spring.
- Inspect your roof and siding for any signs of damage, and make repairs (or call a pro) as needed.
- Power-wash your deck, patio, and driveway to remove dirt and mildew.
- Remove any debris that might have accrued in your gutters or downspouts, to prevent water damage.
