Design With Nature
Are you feeling disconnected from the natural world? You’re not alone. Our built environment can be stark and feel completely unnatural. To combat that, you might consider incorporating elements of nature into your home (or office) design. Doing that is biophilic design, and it’s been popular for years. At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we have a few ideas for ways to bring this design principle to life in your space. Read on!
Distance From Nature
Not too long ago, humans literally lived in nature, surviving off the land and keeping rhythm with the sun. But in today’s world, our homes are removed from nature, and electricity lets us keep any hours. A variety of studies illustrate that, with contact with nature, people can be happier, more productive, less stressed, and more creative. So it only makes sense to come up with ways to connect with our “roots.” Enter biophilic design.
Using Biophilic Design
Biophilic design follows several principles:
- Bring in living elements of nature. Even if you’re not a “green thumb,” an easy way to do this is by adding plants to your home—you can use regular houseplants, succulents (which take less water and overall care), or even faux plants.
- Incorporate the natural environment. Use earth tones in your color scheme, and add images of animals and nature.
- Refer to natural patterns. Nature loves a pattern—just look at the grain in granite or the way seashells have swirls.
- Add naturally occurring shapes. Consider arches or water paths.
- Rely on natural sunlight. Here’s where window treatments come in. You can find natural elements in treatments like Provenance® Woven Wood Shades, which are made from natural reeds, grasses, and bamboo. Or choose simple Designer Roller Shades in earth tones to reflect a natural element while maintaining a minimalist look so as not to detract from the window. And consider adding PowerView® Automation to your window coverings. With PowerView, you can set your treatments to open and close with local sunrise and sunset times, so that you can be firmly in touch with natural rhythms.
