Considerations for Doors

Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Bypass Shutters

When we say “window,” most people think of an opening in a wall of a home, usually square or rectangle. However, there are more types of “window” openings that don’t fit that description. Doors can have windows—either as part of the door or beside or above it. And some doors actually almost count as windows themselves. If you’ve got a door with a window, you likely have some privacy, light, or UV issues you might want to address. At F&R Interiors serving the greater L.A. area, we’ll be more than happy to help you figure out the right solution for your situation. Read on for some ideas, and be sure to contact one of our specialists today!

Sliding Glass Doors

Sliders are one type of window that is also a door. Their treatments are usually vertically oriented versus the standard horizontal. When you have your new slider treatment hung, be sure it will open in the same direction as the slider, so that it stacks on the opposite side of the main opening. Be sure to check out Skyline® Gliding Window Panels, which offer a contemporary look and come in numerous fabrics and color options. Also consider Duette® Honeycomb Shades with the vertically oriented Vertiglide™ operating system. If the slider is heavily used, look into shutters, which are extremely durable.

French Doors

French doors offer a great aesthetic as well as a view to the outside. They’re usually mounted outside the window frame, so window coverings for them will likely need extension brackets or spacer blocks, as well as a cutout for the door handle. A great French door option is the NewStyle® Hybrid Shutter, which is available with cutouts and a dovetail construction. If you prefer soft treatments, consider Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which can lie flat behind the door handles, or roller shades, which lie flush against the glass.

Front Doors

Many homes have side windows with their front doors—and they’re usually tall and narrow. These windows offer light and allow you to see the porch, but remember that they also provide a view in for peepers, so you might want to consider privacy protection. Look to cellular shades, blinds, shutters, and vertical sheers such as Luminette® Privacy Sheers. Other doors are built with a specialty shape such as an arch above them. These windows are aesthetically pleasing, but they also pose issues like damaging UV rays or lack of insulation meaning outside air gets in or inside air escapes out. One solution is cellular shades with the Hunter Douglas EasyView® Arch, which can raise and lower instead of being stationary. Or, if you have a window inside the door, look at options like Duette® Honeycomb Shades, which offer extra insulation at the glass.
