Color for the Whole Room
If you’re thinking of changing the color of a room, you might be considering only the walls. However, detail color is just as important. The accents and smaller bits, in fact, could help make or break an entire look. At F&R Interiors serving the greater Los Angeles area, we can help you choose a color scheme that can impact the whole space, not just the walls. See below for some ideas, and be sure to contact one of our consultants for more about your particular situation.
Determining Color
As you think about the whole room, consider how all colors might come together. You could use a color wheel, which can show you the relationships between colors so you can know what will go well together. Complementary colors are directly across the wheel from each other, and analogous colors are next to each other. Also think about the spots you might seldom look at—in particular, the baseboards.
You might think that the only option for the baseboards is to keep them white; however, you can actually add some great depth to your room by swapping out the baseboard color as well. Here are a few things to consider:
- Off-white. Using cream, ivory, or off-white can be a good offset to a dark wall color. Because these lighter colors could be tinged with blue or pink undertones, be sure to speak with a color professional to get the right shade.
- Stain. If you want to draw attention to the real wood of the baseboards and create a warm, traditional look, use stain. With light-colored walls, choose a lighter stain, and with dark-colored walls, choose a darker stain.
- Dark colors. For a contemporary look, use dark colors; if it’s a particularly small space, dark baseboards can add depth.
Intentional Décor
Your décor can add to the overall look and bring visual interest and personality if you add intentional pops of color through accents. Use artwork, a vase, throw pillows, or throw rugs to bring some zing to a neutral palette or to complement your main color.
Color Through Window Treatments
Your window treatments can play a large role in overall scheme of the room, tying together your look with ease. If your walls are bright and bold, consider a neutral window treatment for balance. Duette® Cellular Shades, for example, are offered in numerous neutral colors to enhance a room. On the flip side, if your walls are neutral, your window treatments can bring that hint of color or pattern.
