Gear Up for Spring Cleaning

As we near summer, it’s a good time to tackle those household cleaning tasks many people put off and get going on a deep clean of the entire home. General Home Maintenance

How long has it been since you last changed the batteries in your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors? Now might be a good time to knock that out—and better yet, consider investing in the 10-year units so you don’t have worry about that never-ending chirping when a battery goes bad. Likewise, if you haven’t changed your furnace filter, now’s the time. Same goes for your dryer vent—clear it of dust and lint. Finally, clean out the gutters and be sure they can flow well.

Organization For Every Room

Organizing areas is something that’s easy to put off. But if you’ve looked at some zones around your house and have wished they were tidier, it’s probably time to take care of it—your garage, pantry, closets, and storage areas will thank you for it! Sort through and determine what you really don’t need. Sort through your photos, whether they’re printouts or digital images on your computer or phone. Use an online service to create a photo album where you can keep your memories close at hand whenever you like.

Clean Your Appliances

Clean your oven, computers (when was the last time you cleaned the keyboard?), and televisions. And don’t neglect the refrigerator—clean the bottom, where everything drips, and be sure to pull it from the wall and clean up any dust bunnies there and beneath the unit.

Don’t Forget About the Window Areas

It’s funny how grimy windows can get without our even noticing. If you see that your glass is dirty, clean the interior and exterior to improve your view. While you’re at it, wash the screens and clean off the sills. Finally, do some maintenance on your window treatments. Use a cloth or a duster to dust blinds and shades, and add the brush attachment to your vacuum to clean treatments like Silhouette®. If you have cellular shades such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades, use compressed air to clean the dust out. And if your aluminum or faux wood blinds (such as Modern Precious Metals® Aluminum Blinds or Everwood® Alternative Wood Blinds) are particularly grimy, you can remove them and clean them with lukewarm water in a bathtub or sink. Reinstall the treatment while it’s still damp, and lower it to let it completely dry.
